A Journey Unique To Motherhood
Date: March 2009
(date to be confirmed)
Time: 10-4pm
Venue: St Stephens
Church Hall, 14 Watling St, St Albans AL1 2PX
Fees: £35
including lunch
Facilitators:
Yvonne Adams and Charlotte Wilmer-Barbrook
Aims of The Workshop:
This workshop is designed for women who have recovered from postnatal
illness but are struggling to come to terms with the after effects
of their experience.
The workshop explores
the journey from womanhood to motherhood using a combination of
talking and creative exercises. Using group as well as working in
pairs women will have the chance to explore their pre-birth, birth
and post-birth experiences.
In the pre-birth section
of the workshop, time will be spent looking at the affects of an
individuals upbringing, family traditions and culture. Women
will be asked to reflect on the influence of all their possible
primary caregivers and the potential negative and positive messages
inherited from these people. Exercises will include exploring pre-child
status, personal fantasies and expectations of the future child.
Women will also have chance to study the influence of the media
in its portrayal of pregnant women and new mothers.
In the birth section
of the workshop, pair work will focus on the actual experience of
giving birth and memories of crucial moments following the birth
when the imagined baby becomes reality. Using these personal accounts,
women will be encouraged to see how their unique birthing stories
become their first steps into motherhood.
The post-birth section
of the workshop is where women describe their individual descents
into postnatal illness and their awareness of the severity of their
condition. Using these individual accounts of postnatal illness
the workshop will culminate in examining the various ways in which
women can use the experience of postnatal illness to attain greater
emotional well-being and self-acceptance.
